We are close to the York train station (more detail to come) and from what I understand the buses in York are good and frequent. From some initial research, train fare from London is about 19.50 pounds which is about $40 one way. That's booking as far in advance as possible. Ironically, the fare is a little bit more to take the train from Manchester which is geographically closer. The time it takes is still close to 2 hours (about the same as driving and just a little less than the time it takes to get to London). The airfare to Manchester is also suppose to be more expensive.
